Those words of Ernest Hemingway might be a pretty good guiding principle for many managers. For people like being listened to. Some firms use a technique known as a "listening circle". In such a circle, only one person can talk about the issues they face at a time and there is no interruption. A study cited in the Harvard Business Review found that employees who had taken part in a listening circle subsequently suffered less social anxiety and had fewer worries about work-related matters than those who did not.*** ⼀些公司使⽤⼀种被称为“倾听圈”的⽅式:在这样⼀个圈⼦ ⾥,每次只有⼀个⼈可以谈论他们⾯临的问题,且在表达时不 会被打断。 Listening has been critical to the career of Richard Mullender, who was a hostage negotiator, dealing with everything from suicide interventions to international kidnaps. He defines listening as "the identification, selection and interpretation of the key words". It is crucial to all effective communication. Plenty of people think that good listening is about nodding your head or keeping eye contact. But that is not really listening, Mr Mullender argues. A good listener is always looking for facts, emotions and indications of the interlocutor's values. Another important point to bear in mind is that, when you talk, you are not listening. The listener's focus should be on analysis. Of course, a listener needs to speak occasionally. One approach is to make an assessment of what the other person is telling you and then check it with them ("It seems to me that what you want is X"). That gives the other party a sense that they are being understood. The fundamental aim is to build up a relationship so the other person likes you and trusts you, Mr Mullender says. He needs a guiding hand. Don't be evil" was a guiding principle for Google. technique /tekˈniːk/ • n. ⼿段,⽅法;技术,⼯艺 at a time • 每次,⼀次 • 例句:Beat in the eggs, one at a time. 搭配短语:one step at a time subsequently /ˈsʌb.sɪ.kwənt.li/ • adv. 经历,遭受(坏事) • 词义辨析:suffer, suffer from • suffer 和 suffer from 有时候区别不⼤,可以换⽤,⽐ 如 suffer hunger 和 suffer from hunger 都表示“挨饿”。但 是 suffer from 后⾯经常加疾病名称,⽐如“患有头痛”, suffer from headache。⽽ suffer sth. 的⼈”) intervention /ˌɪn.tɚˈven.ʃən/ • n. He intervened in the dispute. • 搭配短语:a friend intervention(朋友间的劝说) kidnap /ˈkɪd.næp/ • n. 绑匪) interpretation /ɪnˌtɝː.prəˈteɪ.ʃən/ • n. ⽐如“对法律条⽂进⾏不同诠释”,可以说 different interpretations of the law。 eye contact • 眼神交流 • 例句:Introverts tend to avoid eye contact. There are clear indications that the economy is improving. = There is every indication that the economy is improving. interlocutor /ˌɪn.tɚ̬ ˈlɑː.kjə.tɚ̬ / • n. 价值) • 搭配短语:be good value(...... The lunch special is really good value. • 反义短语:be bad / poor value • 搭配短语:moral values 搭配短语:traditional values bear in mind • 牢记在⼼ • 相关词汇:bear(v. There are three points to bear in mind. occasionally /əˈkeɪ.ʒən.əl.i/ • adv. 间或,偶尔 • 英⽂释义:sometimes but not often 相关词汇:always > usually > often > sometimes > seldom > never(频率从⾼到低排列) assessment /əˈses.mənt/ • n. The test was to assess the academic achievement. fundamental /ˌfʌn.dəˈmen.tə̬l/ • adj. 主要的,根本的 • 搭配短语:a fundamental question of principle build up • 建⽴,增强 • 例句:The words built up my confidence.
